Square Chess is a free and open source Android chess app designed around devices that conventional chess apps do not always use particularly well. The board comes first, with the rest of the interface fitting around the space that remains.
It was originally built for the Unihertz Titan 2 Elite, but it also works on conventional Android phones and tablets, as well as E Ink devices such as the Onyx Boox.

Built for unusual screens
Chess is naturally square, so Square Chess makes the board as large as possible and adapts the controls around it. On devices with a physical keyboard you can type moves such as e4, Nf3, O-O or e2e4 instead of relying entirely on touch.
There is also a dedicated E Ink mode with a black and white board, hatched squares, shape-based highlights and no animations.

Play your way
You can play against the computer at ten difficulty levels, solve from a collection of 10,000 offline chess puzzles, or play with another person on the same device. Square Chess can also be used alongside a real chess board to record a game as you play, and there is a standalone chess clock.
Games can be imported and exported as PGN for use with Lichess, ChessBase and other chess software.

Offline and private
